Take a moment and think about it: does India have monuments dedicated to Pakistan’s heroes? Does England have monuments dedicated to Washington, Gandhi, Herzl or Franklin? Does France have squares dedicated to Algeria’s rebels? No of course not. The difference, however, is that all those rebellions were to give oppressed people rights, not to enable people to continue to oppress people. In America however, we have something different.
In America, not only do the Confederate monuments of a losing army that fought to enslave a tenth of the population have monuments but their monuments far out number the Union monuments.
There is literally no other country that would do something like that, commemorate generals and politicians because of whom the country suffered its bloodiest war.
There are many strange things about America, but glorifying losing rebels has to be one of the strangest.
America, you’re funny.
